1995.
I can't remember where it came from. An offer for a weekend
in New York for a relatively inexpensive cost. We decided to go,
had never been to the US and had never particularly wanted to
go to New York. Loved it. Stayed at the Dorset Hotel and saw most
of the sights (it was cloudy so we didn't bother to 'do' the high
risers). People asked afterwards if we felt safe (all those gangsters
and murders!). Of course we did, we didn't go into Central Park
after dark but there are places in London we wouldn't go after
dark. New York is a smashing place, you've seen the movies - now
see the sights. We had to see a show on Broadway, 'Sunset Boulevard'
with Glenn Close would have been nice but no chance. This was
a blessing in disguise as we went to see 'Smokey Joe's Cafe' (I'm
a great Lieber and Stoller fan) and it was FABULOUS. Have seen
it twice since in England. Don't,
however, believe all you hear about the food. Those huge steaks,
I didn't find them. Also, went into a Roy Rogers Burger Bar (Edna
was a great fan of Roy), we couldn't believe that his name was
connected to such c**p! Britain's Burger Bars
are not where I would choose to eat but New York could learn a
lot. "Have a nice day", but NOT at the Roy Rogers Burger
Bar!
