George Armitstead (1847
- 1912) was a Briton (the nephew of the 1st. Baron Armistead) born in
Riga and became the 4th. Mayor of Riga in 1901. In 1912, shortly before
his death, he was given Honorary Citizenship by Riga City Council. Czar
Nicholas II of Russia admired his work so much that he asked him to
become the Mayor of St. Petersburg but Armitstead refused.
