Roland (died 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne. His life attained legendary status and statues were erected in the Middle Ages in German Cities as an emblem of the freedom and rights of the City. Roland statues are generally placed by the Town Hall (as is this one) although this statue is a more recent example haing been erected in 1896.
