Due to get there at 3 pm
but due to delays (locks?) arrived about 4 pm.
This was a seminal moment
in both of our lives! We had never heard about Stumbling
Stones but, while in town, one of our fellow passengers, Wendy,
told us that, on one of her previous trips, she had been told (by a
Jewish guide) about them but had never found any before. Now she had
and she showed us! They are small memorials placed outside the houses
of where some Jews lived showing their names, birthdate and date of
murder. Some people object to them because they will be trodden on but
I feel it's a wonderful idea. We found a few more and kept looking on
our future stops.
Stumble Stones in Wertheim (there are probably
more)
The Restaurant the first stones we
saw were outside
Anyway, another nice town
with timbered buildings, churches etc. and we found a red British telephone
box (working)! Bought a book, "Beautiful Germany" and had
a sit down by the land train (we didn't have time to do this one), to
glance through it, which is where Wendy found us and told us about stumbling
stones. The rest of the trip seemed to pale into insignificance. A few
images of Wertheim:
