Messina, Sicily

2008 Black Sea Melodies:
Most of the City is new (destroyed by an earthquake in 1908 and virtually destroyed in the Second World War) but very impressive none the less. The harbour is guarded by a statue of the Madonna and the Cathedral Square has a very impressive clock which does extraordinary things on the hour! The Fountain of Orion and the Cathedral are also impressive. Took a walk up to a Sanctuary (15 minutes from the Square) which gave some impressive views over the City. Back down to the Square to catch the open top bus tour. These are always good value and we make a beeline for them in Cities where we aren't taking a coach tour. One unfortunate thing that Messina has in common with Naples. Grafitti! Everywhere.
