June 2006 and a magical cruise on the Saga
Ruby to the Baltic. Visited Stockholm
(Sweden), Helsinki (Finland), St.
Petersburg (Russia), Tallinn (Estonia),
Warnemunde (Germany), Copenhagen
(Denmark) and Oslo (Norway).
The weather could not have been better (sunny and hot) and the Captain,
who had being doing the cruise for 10 years, said that he'd never known
weather like it and compared it to a Caribbean cruise!
We were on a table for four and I don't know if someone at Saga had
a wicked sense of humour but our companions were Mr. and Mrs. Jones
(Marie and Bill below)! Smith and Jones, they had to be joking! One
plus that the Ruby has over the Rose is the View Restaurant. We managed
to book for one visit (with the Joneses) and it was excellent. If you
go on the Ruby book early! We also had the honour of being asked to
dine at the Captain's Table (Captain David Warden Owen) - we accepted!
Among the guest speakers were Henry Sandon (a very respected TV Antiques
expert) and Sir James Spicer (A Thatcherite Conservative politician
who became vice-chairman of the Party). Both excellent speakers (although
Sir James's wife, who was in charge of the pictorial slides, left a
lot to be desired!).
As usual we made up a team for the quizzes, seen below waiting in Southampton
for the call to go home.
Clockwise from left Edna, Terry,
Bill, Robert, Mavis and Marie.
